Well tonight a friend of mine ended up getting some tickets and seen Friday the 13th early. Ive been to screenings before so I know how it goes. Turn your phones off, no cameras of any type and there on you like a hawk. I ended up picking up about 10 promo posters which I collect what they call 1-sheets for movies. Ok on to the goods...
I dont want to give any spoilers away but lets say I went in with very low expectations and wasnt expecting much from this remake. I grew up watching Friday the 13th and have always considered Jason one of those childhood heroes. I know its funny but thats how much love I got for the J man. Just such an iconic character.
This film was done by platinum dunes which is the same company that brought us The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes. What they did here was basically take the first 4 Friday films and roll them into one movie with a little more back story to the mutant hillbilly that we've all grown up with. Thru out the whole movie you see references and similar scenes from older Friday films which I thought was pretty cool. I did notice is that its definetly a new Jason, its very bright and hollywood with lots of pretty teen characters. Now I know the old Friday films had there own "pretty" teens for the 70's and 80's, but I think the older films had more of a dirty gritty look. I guess more of that cheezy "grindhouse" feel to it. This film the characters play out every sterotype in the book as well as they just look like they should be appearing on some kind of WB network show for high schoolers there so clean cut.
You have the token black guy, the hot chicks, and one slutty hot chick, they even added an asian guy to this cast, theres the asshole, the local store clerk and of course just random campers and such. Plenty of sex and drugs to meet all the typical stupid requirements that are thrown in there for the masses to enjoy and make there comments. I heard enough people making comments to write my own movie on. Screaming and laughing out loud always goes hand in hand with these type of movies.
So back to the main star of this movie, Jason. The movie opens with a little back story and right from the get go, we get to see a glimpse of the man, which at this point everyone knows by now its "Sackhead" Jason. In the original pt. 2 hes wearing a potato sack or Ive heard some people say a pillow sack. You choose, either way its a tough look, and with this new "Sackhead" hes got it wrapped so tight he looks more like a ninja. Im not complaining because he still looks awesome like that, I actually would have prefered to see him with the sack on than when he finally gets his hockey mask, but again Jason isnt remembered for the sack its the hockey mask that brought his fame. I wont go into how he gets it, but he does and of course the crowd cheered and people were whispering and giggling and just enjoying see there character truly come to life.
So once he sports the hockey mask, its your typical stalk and slash film. I love slasher films and I have to say for a remake it was done pretty well. I mean I was talking to my friend and if I wanted I could get really nit picky and tear it apart, but I kept telling myself for what it was it was done pretty well. To me it showed Jason in a more human like form which is what I prefer over his half rotted mindless zombie act. He was thinking and planning and showing the audience why Camp Crystal Lake belonged to him. Again a few things I thought were a little corny, but to appease the masses these things have to be there, its part of the slasher formula that will probably never go away. I mean it was an enjoyable watch and in the end thats what counts.
So over all it was a good fun film, dont go in expecting too much just enjoy it have fun. Now the reason for the photo is because pt. 3 is my all time favorite and If I would compare it to pt. 3 over all...of course Pt. 3 is still by far the best of all the Friday films, plus it is the one film where he sports the hockey mask for the first time as well. Take it with a grain of salt, just fun flicks cant take them real serious, just laugh, scream, and enjoy the bloodshed. As Jason brings in a new year. If this film does good which I almost can gaurantee it is, they are already in talks for a sequal...go figure.
